Trinium was first discovered by the Tau'ri on PXY-887. They were overjoyed with its potential as an alloy component or even in its pure form as a hull building material. The basic Oxide however is highly brittle and thus useless for construction.
When refined, Trinium is said to be 100x stronger and 100x lighter than carbon steel. The exact strength of Trinium is unconfirmed.
The Tau'ri usually add Trinium to steel, making it both lighter and stronger without needing huge amounts of Trinium. The Tollan on the other hand, made extensive use of Trinium for all their technology.
The same properties that make Trinium an excellent construction material, also make it hard to process, making Trinium refining an art in itself.
